Experienced Heads Lead Saints Senior Mixed Side To Make History

The experienced heads of Townsville Saints Mixed Over 30's side have lead their side to victory, making history at this weekends QLD State Cup by claiming Townsville's first ever title in the division.

The Saints team, buoyed by a host of current and former QLD and Australian players, took on the undefeated Coolum in the grand final of the Mixed Over 30's division at the event after finishing the regular rounds with just one loss on the board, which ironically occurred in their first-round clash against fellow-finalists Coolum.

Despite Coolum going into the grand final battle as favourites, and six games of fatigue becoming a major factor to tired legs and bodies, the experienced Saints side saved their best performance for last, putting on a touch football master class for the strong crowd of supporters.

The high scoring affair gave master magicians Kristian Congoo and Michael Law the opportunity to show the excited crowd exactly why their presence on a touch football field is so revered, each picking up a double and playing a hand in several more of the sides tries.

A hat-trick to Tremayne Horan and a double to Ash Hendry added to the total, bringing the team from a half-time lead of 6-3 to a final score of 14-10, enough to claim the STATE CHAMPIONS tag for the first time in Townsville's history at the event.

Earlier matches saw a 9-3 victory in round two against Caboolture, which featured a four-try effort from Joshua Hall, alongside a double from Sean Lynch, while the round three 10-2 win against Redlands saw Rhys Matsen, Monique Abel, and Lynch each pick up doubles to see the Saints side finish in third place and drawing them to play Palm Beach in the Preliminary Final on Saturday afternoon.

The hard-fought game against Palm Beach was claimed 7-3, putting the side on a path to play Jimboomba on Sunday morning in a do-or-die cross-pool elimination final.

A solid all-round effort, with doubles from Tee Soloman, Monique Abel, and Chris Jensen helped the Saints outfit to a 11-6 victory, taking them on to play the undefeated Caboolture in the semi-final, where Jensen, Abel, alongside experienced touch football heads Congoo and Law lead the charge despite signs of fatigue starting to show, each earning a double to take a 9-5 victory and earn a spot against the first-placed and undefeated Coolum in the grand final.

Three other Townsville sides competed at the QLD State Cup event, with the Mixed Premier side narrowly going down in the semi-final to eventual winners Gold Coast, Men's Under 20's side finishing in fourth place after a resounding final victory against Palm Beach, and the Men's Over 40's side finishing just outside of the finals series in fifth place despite some strong results through the round games.
